RPC Interview

This is the transcript of the interview with creative director Bernd Beyreuther shown in the RPC-Trailer from 24.04.2007. You can download it here.

What does the world of Drakensang look like?

Here we have regions with high mountains, dark pine and fir woods and timber houses and castles, just like we know from regions like Franconia, Bohemia or Saxonia. That's what our Aventuria looks like.

What's your role in the creation of Drakensang?

My name is Bernd Beyreuther. I'm co-owner and creative director here at Radon Labs. My job in this project can be compared to that of a director.

Why do you use the The Dark Eye licence?

The Dark Eye is Germany's biggest pen & paper roleplay system. It exists for more than 20 years and the thing with The Dark Eye, the world of The Dark Eye, Aventuria, is that it is a lively world, which constantly develops. For instance you can subscribe to your own newsletter, which gives you the newest information about what is happening in the world of Aventuria every two months. In all those years more than 7 million roleplayers have played in the world of Aventuria.

Will you completely convert The Dark Eye ruleset to PC?

To convert pen & paper rules to PC is always difficult and we tried to find a compromise between an easy handling and converting as many pen & paper rules as possible. The reason why we want to convert the original rules is simple: It is an completely balanced system that works and we want do interfere as little as possible.

What can you tell us about the gameplay?

In the end, the gameplay of Drakensang is classic fantasy. We want a classic party RPG with 4 characters. We want a epic storyline, we want characters that you remember and we want strategic, turnbased combats. [real-time with pause -ed]

How does Drakensang differ from the old TDE games? [Realms of Arkania Trilogy -ed]

The notable difference to the old games that came out 12 years ago is that for the first time we can realize the world 1:1 as it is described. For the first time we can enter a city like Ferdok with it's 1.000 citizens and take a look around, and we tried hard to reproduce every detail as it is described.

How did the story emerge?

The story of Drakensang has been written by 4 official authors of TDE. It took half a year to write down the story, and the result was thousands of pages of story material. Printed out in close type, bound into 3 large folders, it took two years for 35 people to convert this story into a playable game.

What can you tell us about the equipment system?

An important component of a CRPG is, of course, the equipment system, that you can put on and take off the items of your characters as you wish, and that was also very important to me for Drakensang, that you can freely equip your character, that I can change helmets, huts, shoes, clothes, everything, and that I can equip my characters as I would like to do it.

Who is going to publish Drakensang?

Drakensang is developed together with dtp and is going to be published under their Label Anaconda.

And just for completeness, the slogans between the ingame scenes:

Explore a true-to-detail Aventuria
Fight against dangerous creatures
With your group of adventurers
Travel cities and markets
Wander through forests and riverlands
Explore the underworld
In the world of
The Dark Eye
